The Chairperson of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray, speaking about the Navi Mumbai International Airport renaming debacle stated that the name Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport would be appropriate for this airport.

This comes after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government had decided to name the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport after Shiv Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray.

Earlier in the day, the BJP MLA of Panvel Prashant Thakur met the MNS leader to speak about the same. In view of the situation, he held a press conference at his residence in order to express his views. Speaking about the same, he stated that Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra. Therefore, when an outsider is coming to the state, he is coming to the land of Shivaji Bhonsale I also referred to as Chhatrapati Shivaji who was an Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan.

Furthermore, he added that Balasaheb Thackeray is greatly respected whereas MP DB Patil happens to be a great leader as well. Therefore, there is no need for a debate to discuss the greatness of both icons.

In the past, the opposition, project-affected people and some residents of Navi Mumbai have been demanding the airport to be named after the late Peasant and Workers Party (PWP) leader and former MP DB Patil. Besides, local leaders from Navi Mumbai held a human chain protest on June 10 to put pressure on the state government to name the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMAI) after project affected persons (PAPs) leader late DB Patil. All-Party Action Committee (APAC) that conducted the human chain claimed that over 40,000 villagers from Raigad, Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai formed the human chain.

The APAC claimed that villagers formed a 12 km long human chain from Ambedkar chowk to the CIDCO office in Belapur. They kept sloganeering that the name of the airport should be after Late D B Patil.
