The upcoming Mumbai - Nagpur express highway is expected to have dense plantations on either side. However, a new notification by the office of Urban Development and PWD Minister Eknath Shinde says that the greenery will exclude 13 fruit-bearing plants.

This will include plants like mango, orange, dates, cashew, and jamun among others. Sources quoted by TOI said that this is to avoid animals like monkeys or birds from getting in the way of vehicles. The Wildlife Institute of India is currently working with the government to develop a highway ecosystem.

The ₹55,000-crore project will span 700 km with officials saying that the first 520 km of the expressway could be commissioned within the next few months. The highway will cover 10 districts, six talukas, and 392 villages. When finished, it will allow the distance between Mumbai and Nagpur to be covered within 8 hours, while it currently takes 16 hours.

A total of 11.3 lakh trees will be planted on both sides of the expressway, while water to these trees will be provided via solar-powered pumps and drip irrigation. The official release said that the plants/trees will be maintained for a period of five years.

The highway will include 96 wildlife structures with seven overpass bridges, 89 underpasses, box culverts, and a handful of bridges. These are being developed to allow the safe passage of animals around the highway. The overall cost of wildlife conservation is estimated to be ₹326 crores.
