The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for the weekend. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. This is likely to bring some relief to Mumbai which is yet to witness a continuing downpour.

Whereas heavy rainfall was recorded on Monday night, on Wednesday, the Santacruz observatory recorded 0.1 mm rain for 24 hours which ended at 8.30 am. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory recorded 0.2 mm of rain in the same time period.

The total monthly rainfall recorded till June 30 by the Colaba station was 524.5mm, 16.4 mm below the required average of 540.9 mm. It recorded 16 rainy days in June. During the same period, the Santacruz observatory recorded 395 mm of rain, 110 mm short of the required average of 505 mm, and recorded rain on 14 days.

The southwest monsoon has officially covered Mumbai on June 14. However, only on June 18, an intense spell was observed. This year, Mumbai is yet to receive the constant downpour which happens to be a regular occurrence every year. This has given birth to fears of water cuts being to be faced in the city.

Water scarcity has been looming as a possible threat in Mumbai. In 2019, the catchment area of the lakes received good downpour as the rain continued till the first week of December. As a result, the lakes filled up leading to an adequate supply of water till the summer of 2020.

This is the third time when the city has received less than 10 per cent of water stock in the last six years. This is usually a consequence of insufficient rain in the previous years or a delay in the monsoons. So far, the city has received only a few spells of the rain in several pockets. However, July happens to be the wettest month for Mumbai, therefore, the citizens can be hopeful for incessant rainfall to occur this month, bring much-needed relief to the people.
