On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the business of sweet shops goes up multiple folds as they are offered as prasad to Lord Ganesha during these days. However, this year, due to the pandemic, sweet shops have been suffering losses as people are choosing to stay in their houses and curating the sweets themselves from the comfort of their homes.

A sweet dish prepared using rice flour and sweet coconut jaggery filling, Modak, happens to be the favourite dessert of Lord Ganesha. The story of the Modak, the white dumpling-like sweet, happens to be so legendary that it is mentioned in the Puranas that describe the greatness of Lord Ganesha.

Before the coronavirus-induced lockdown, about 80 quintals of sweets were traded in Mumbai every day. On any normal day of festivities, the turnover goes up to 150 kg. This year, however, the demand for these sweets has come down drastically due to the small number of public festivities.

During the Ganeshotsav, many go to the homes of neighbours or relatives to exchange greeting and wish them good health and prosperity. During this time, most people also exchange sweets including Modaks. Devotees also used to offer large quantities of Modaks during public gatherings.

Amidst the coronavirus outbreak, shop makers have been making a limited number of Modaks whereas devotees are making purchases of normal sweets for the puja.

Apart from Modaks, sweets such as Satori, Puran Poli, Motichoor Ladoo are also offered during Ganeshotsav.
