Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday urged all Ganesh mandals to shorten the height of the idols to four feet. The Chief Minister said that faith is more important than the height of the idol.

In a statement, Thackeray has asked the Ganesh Mandals to install idols with a height not more than four feet for the upcoming Ganeshotsav. He further said that the Ganesh festival needs to be celebrated simply while following the social distancing norms.

“The height of the Ganesh idol should not be more than four feet and gatherings should be avoided. Devotion is more important than the height of the idol,” the Chief Minister said.

The Ganesh Chaturthi falls on August 22 this year and the 10-day celebration will begin on the same day in Maharashtra. In Mumbai and Pune, there is a huge crowd each year visiting various pandals. The CM said that the crowd gatherings should be avoided amid the pandemic.

Moreover, a large number of volunteers are required for idols with big heights. This is why it is recommended that Idol height should remain short, Thackeray said The Dahi Handi festival which is celebrated in August has also been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Chief Minister noted that Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik who organises the Dahi Handi extensively has donated ₹1 crore to the relief fund for the coronavirus. Thackeray said that the coronavirus outbreak has affected the traditions and culture as well.

In a first, Mumbaicha Raja of Ganesh Gully will shrink to a manageable size of 3-4 feet. The celebrations of the Ganesh Gully Mumbaicha Raja started way back in 1927, but this is the first time the idol will be this small in size.
