BMC officials have collected a large quantity of flower and garlands from several places across Mumbai. Unlike every year, Mumbai is celebrating Ganeshotsav 2020, in a rather quiet and simple manner.

Coronavirus outbreak has changed the schedule and plans of most of the festivals this year, and the city, unlike ever is celebrating Ganeshotsav 2020, in a rather quiet and simple manner. Meanwhile, as per reports, the number of Ganpati idols have reduced this year due to the pandemic.

Besides this, a large number of flower garlands have been collected from several places across Mumbai. It is said that the sale of flowers and garlands has also reduced drastically, by about 30 per cent. Officials will be preparing fertilizer out of the garlands, and the compost will be used across various municipal parks.

Government of Maharashtra and the local municipal bodies imposed several restrictions on the festivities this year, and Mumbaikars appreciated the decision and guidelines issued. On the other hand, several arrangements have been made by the government for the immersion of Ganpati idols. Artificial ponds and mobile ponds have been arranged, along with vehicles to collect used garlands and flowers.

The solid waste management department of the corporation informed that the number of garlands has reduced, in comparison to previous years. During the first 5 days of Ganeshotsav this year, i.e. from 22nd to 26th August, a total of 1,30,031 kgs of used flowers and garlands, out of which 41,000 kgs was collected from Borivali area. Meanwhile, 11,600 kg was collected in Bandra West and 10,000 kg from Parel-Lalbaug. On the other hand, least collection has been of 190 kg from Masjid Bunder, and 300 kg in Bandra East Division.

This year, Ganeshotsav ends on September 1, 2020, and it is expected that the government will revise the guidelines for the next phase of unlock, under the ‘Mission Begin Again’ initiative. As per reports, Mumbai local trains and gyms may resume services for the public after the festivities are over.
