India’s historic World Cup campaign came to an end with a heavy 4-0 defeat against Ghana on Thursday, October 12 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.

Ghana started the game with a better tempo and were attacking India’s goal right from the start. Ghana are a seasoned footballing nation and this game was going to be a tough one for our World Cup debutants.

A brace from Eric Ayiah and goals from Emmanuel Toku and Richard Danston put the two-time winners on top of Group A with Colombia in second position and USA bagging the third spot. All three teams finished with six points each and goals scored, but Ghana’s goal against won them top spot. Colombia beat USA in the other Group A game.

For India, they have no reason to feel embarrassed as this was their first ever World Cup across all age divisions whereas other teams are considered as footballing nations. The difference in quality was apparent but what India were strong with was the spirit.

Luis Norton de Matos’ side went in with great conviction and nobody will ever forget Jeakson Singh's bullet header against Colombia which was a truly epic moment!

Ghana dominated India on the wings as power and pace was something they were superior at. Captain Ayiah’s goals came from the flanks with some careless play from the Indians.

India have talent in abundance with Dheeraj Singh, Komal Thatal, Boris Singh, Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh set for a bright future.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 will be a landmark competition in India’s sporting history and a huge step for All India Football Federation (AIFF) going forward.
