Mumbai City FC has been a side with several gems who have shown their talent while playing for the team. Owing to the stiff competition in the team, there are various talented players that never make it starting XI and one such player is Mohammed Rafique.

Born on March 26, 1991, Rafique has played for various clubs before making his way amongst the Islanders.

Hailing from Kolkata, Rafique spent his initial years at Tollygunge Agragami, before joining United Sports Club in 2010. After four years, his career took a turn when he joined ATK in 2014 on loan, where he ended up scoring the winning goal of the tournament, helping ATK become the ‘First Champions’ in the Indian Super League (ISL).

After his two-year stint with ATK in Hero ISL 2014 and 2015, Rafique went on to join Kerala Blasters in 2016. Two years later, he was signed by Mumbai City FC, only for not being able to feature in the opening XI for the complete season. The midfielder played the number of matches for the Islanders the last term, although mostly as an impact substitute. Rafique will be eager to become a regular in the starting XI in the 2019-20 campaign.

After spending his youth years at Tollygunge Agragami, Rafique had joined Prayag United in 2010 and went on to play six senior games in his debut season, scoring once against Chirag United Kerala.

I-League Career

Rafique played five games during the 2011-12 I-League season, his second at senior level for Prayag. He also established himself as a regular in the centre of midfield in his final two seasons at United SC.

East Bengal

Rafique signed for East Bengal in May 2014 on a two-year deal and was loaned out to Atlético de Kolkata for the 2014 Indian Super League. The midfielder then returned to parent club East Bengal for the 2014-15 I-League season, making his debut for the team in the 2014-15 Federation Cup.

International Career

Rafique made his debut for the Indian national football team against Laos on 2 June 2016 for the Asian Cup Qualifiers. He scored his first goal against Laos on 7 June 2016 in the 85th minute of the match.

A Crucial Role

Mumbai have been struggling with their defence and that's where Mohammed Rafique comes in picture. He has only played one game for Mumbai City FC and therefore, his talent needs to be provided with the necessary exposure. His untapped talent might come handy for The Islanders.
