In a step to encourage organ donation and save lives, Maharashtra government is likely to recognise 12 private hospitals in Navi Mumbai as Non-transplant Organ Retrieval Centres (NTORC).

Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai held a organ donation awareness meet on December 9 which was attended by representatives of 15 Navi Mumbai hospitals who showed interest in applying for NTROC. The meet was brought by ZTCC (Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee), a non-governmental organization (NGO) that facilitates organ donation between donors and recipients in the state.

NTROC do not conduct organ transplants but are authorised to retrieve organs after a patient is declared brain dead. As more private hospitals come on board, more families will opt for donations which will, in turn, shorten the wait for organ transplant recipients.

Experts said all hospitals that have an intensive care unit (ICU) and an operation theatre can become NTORCs, under the government’s Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. At present, of the 56 NTORCs, about 10 are private facilities.

Sai Snehadeep Hospital, Navi Mumbai, is planning to register for NTORC. The institute considers it as a noble initiative for the hospital, from a social point of view. Dr. Nilesh Sarvaiya, hospital representative who attended the session said there is such a huge gap between the number of donors and recipients that it only makes sense for more hospitals to apply for NTORC and encourage more families for organ donation.
