Mumbai has been the worst-hit city in the country ever since the coronavirus crisis began in March. While the number of positive cases are slowly moving towards a decline in the city, the adjoining areas of Mumbai which fall under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have witnessed a massive surge in the COVID-19 cases in the past two months.

According to the data provided by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, the area recorded 145 new COVID-19 cases along with five new deaths on Wednesday. Mira-Bhayandar has so far recorded a total of 7,983 infected cases. The death toll has gone up to 266 in the area. On Wednesday, 221 patients recovered from the deadly virus taking the total recovery toll to 6,093 in the area.

There has been a sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in the MMR after the state-wide lockdown rules were eased in the first week of June. The civic body of Mira-Bhayandar had given permission for non-essential stores to re-open in the area. The relaxed rules in the ares led to the rise in coronavirus cases in the past few weeks in Mira-Bhayandar.

Due to the sudden hike in infected cases, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation had imposed a total lockdown from July 1 to July 10. Later the lockdown was extended till July 18. Now, the lockdown for the hotspots and containment zones have been extended till July 31.

Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 1,109 cases on Wednesday, taking its total caseload to 1,11,991 across the city. With 60 new deaths registered, the death toll has gone up to 6,247 in Mumbai.
