The COVID-19 report released by Maharashtra State Health Ministry, on May 14, 2020, revealed that more than 1,000 patients have died from coronavirus infection in the state. Maharashtra witnessed the highest single-day jump with 1,602 cases and 44 deaths, taking the total to 27,524 with 1,019 deaths. Further, 6,049 patients have recovered so far.

The city of Mumbai also witnessed a massive jump with 998 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 16,738 with 621 deaths. Pune, on the other hand, has 2,977 with 166 deaths.

Officials from the state government have also ensured that cluster-based containment zones are also created if more cases are identified from a particular locality. So far, Mumbai has a total of 2,643 containment zones. Certain clusters like slums and chawls are closely monitored. As of May 12, 2020, seven slums in Mumbai's K-West wards were sealed, and on May 13, 2020, Khar-Danda was sealed as the number of coronavirus cases increased in the locality.

Keeping this exponential increase in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently decided to divide the city into seven zones, which are now being monitored closely by seven IAS officers from the municipality. They observe the locations during the day, and after preparing the report in the afternoon, the outcome is discussed with the new BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.

The report also stated that around 3,15,686 people in Maharashtra are home quarantined and 15,465 people are quarantined at government-run centres. Total 2,40,145 samples have been tested for the virus infection, out of which 2,12,621 tested negative and 27,524 showed positive to coronavirus.

It is also said that the lockdown in the state may be extended further until May 31, 2020. Official confirmation is yet to be made by Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray.
