While areas in Mumbai city were initially the major hotspots for the deadly coronavirus, the focus has now shifted towards districts like Thane and Navi Mumbai, which have seen a massive surge in Covid-19 cases for a while. On Wednesday, Navi Mumbai crossed the 10,000-mark with 356 fresh coronavirus cases. The total number of Covid-19 infected patients have now reached 10,273 in the region. With eight new deaths registered, the fatality toll has also risen to 318.

The coronavirus infected patients found on Wednesday include 55 from Belapur, 93 from Nerul, 29 from Vashi, 33 from Turbhe, 47 from Kopar Khairane, 48 from Ghansoli, 39 from Airoli and 12 from Digha. Reportedly, about 1,755 coronavirus patients have been found in Navi Mumbai in just the past six days.

On Wednesday, 278 patients recovered and returned home. Out of them, 30 were from Belapur, 31 from Nerul, 50 from Vashi, 15 from Turbhe, 57 from Kopar Khairane, 55 from Ghansoli, 33 from Airoli and 7 were from Digha. The total number of cured patients in Navi Mumbai has reached 6,350 and at present, 3,605 patients are undergoing treatment. 

As per media reports, nearly every third patient who tested Covid-19 positive in Navi Mumbai is undergoing treatment in the hospital. Keeping the increasing coronavirus positive numbers in mind, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) decided to extend the lockdown from July 13 midnight to July 19 midnight. All shops and businesses have been asked to remain shut. The only exception that is given is for those selling essential items and pharmacies.
