On Thursday, December 30, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry, Luv Aggarwal while interacting with media persons stated that nearly 90 per cent of India's adult population has been vaccinated against coronavirus with the first dose, reports stated.

Aggarwal added that since December 26, India has been reporting 10,000 daily cases. Further, he remarked that there are 961 Omicron variant cases in the country from which 320 have recovered.
During the media interaction, ICMR DG Dr Balram Bhargava elaborated on how precautionary doses are utilized to mitigate the severity of infection, hospitalization as well as deaths. Therefore, he believes that the use of masks and avoidance of mass gatherings is essential.
Bhargava also stressed the importance of home isolation in fighting the virus. In other developments, the Union Health Ministry also stated that the government will be sending SMS to the eligible elderly population, reminding them to take the precautionary dose, January 10 onwards.

On Thursday, the Centre also wrote to the Maharashtra government, asking them to enhance surveillance specifically in five districts that included Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Pune, Thane and Nagpur since they have recorded high test positivity rates in the past few weeks.
