Maharashtra Environment and Tourism Minister, Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday called for vaccination centres to be set up across all 227 electoral wards in Mumbai.

He proposed the plan during the inauguration of a coronavirus vaccination centre at Wadala’s Ackworth Leprosy Hospital. This vaccination centre will have two booths and officials said that it can inoculate up to 400 people per day.

Thackeray stressed the need to open vaccinations across all corporators’ wards given that vaccinations will be allowed for anyone over the age of 18 starting May 1. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that it will double the number of government vaccination centres to 100 and also allow corporate establishments to vaccinate their staffers in large numbers.

The BMC plans to cover at least 80 lakh of the adult population, though the civic body will need at least 1.6 crore doses of the vaccine to see this plan through. Further, the BMC is also planning to implement a minimum of four government-run vaccination centres in each of the 24 wards across Mumbai.

The inclusion of Ackworth takes the total number of vaccination centres in the city to 130 including 73 private, 39 civic, and 17 state-run hospitals. The BMC has vaccinated nearly 2.76 lakh people with two doses while 17.66 lakh citizens have reportedly received the first shot of the vaccine so far.

Despite the number of vaccination centres seeing a steady increase, the supply of vaccines continues to be a concern. On Tuesday, April 20, around 6 civic, 5 state and 38 private hospitals did not inoculate any citizens.
