The National Commission for Medical Sciences has decided to make the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) card mandatory for registration in outpatient and inpatient departments of all medical colleges and affiliated hospitals in the country. So now all citizens need to get an ABHA card. The card registration will be considered for assessment of hospitals, patients and related medical supplies.
In the recently held 14th meeting of the National Medical Science Commission, it has been decided to make the ABHA card mandatory for pre-registration of patients coming for treatment in the outpatient department, inpatient department, accident department and emergency department of all medical colleges and their affiliated hospitals in the country. Therefore, ABHA card number will be required along with hospital registration number while registering the patients.
It is important to take into account the number of patients and the facilities available for treatment in the hospital in making decisions regarding increased seats for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medical colleges, new colleges, permission to admit students, annual renewal. This requires valid registration of patients. Therefore, the commission has decided to make the ABHA card mandatory for patient registration.
The process of making an ABHA card is easy. It can also be made with the help of an Aadhaar card. Also, since the ABHA card is available to citizens nowadays, this process will be easy to implement. Therefore, for the academic year 2025-26 and beyond, card registration for patients and related medical materials will be considered for evaluation decisions. Meanwhile, the commission has also clarified that no patient should be deprived of treatment without an ABHA.
