Coronavirus cases in the city of Mumbai have reduced with time, and amidst the pandemic, the Maharashtra government had to also find ways to ensure safety during festivals like Ganeshotsav and Moharram. Several guidelines were issued and followed, and the celebrations this year were rather quiet and simple.

Despite the control measures, reports have revealed that the number of coronavirus patients in Thane and Panvel districts have increased in the last few days, where more than two hundred patients are being reported in both the cities, eventually raising concerns for the officials.

It is said that the COVID-19 cases were under control before Ganeshotsav 2020, however, due to the festivities and celebrations, people crowded the market areas, posing a risk for the spread of the virus. Furthermore, the increase could also be because of the congestion in homes, societies and premises. A survey conducted by the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has shown that the infection has spread as social distancing norms were violated.

Observing the rise earlier, the Thane Municipal Commissioner had announced an 18-day lockdown due to the increase in the number of patients, despite the 'Mission Begin Again' initiative, however, officials observed that the cases declined during the lockdown. Around 400-500 cases were being reported earlier, and a significant drop was witnessed due to the lockdown. However, with the festivals have resulted in more cases once again and officials are working hard to ensure the cases reduce and the spread is contained.

In the last 12 days, the number of cases in PMC increased by more than 2,600. Currently, Panvel has a total of 14,206 cases, out of which more than 10,000 have been discharged post the treatment, and 300 have died due to the infection.
