Several people across the nation have been infected with coronavirus, while many have died due to the disease. Additionally, the rise of 'mucormycosis' along with the COVID-19 has created fear among the citizens.

According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, May 12, over 111 patients of the invasive fungal infection called mucormycosis are undergoing treatment at four medical colleges alone.

As per reports, Sion Hospital was treating 32 cases, KEM had 34 cases, BYL Nair had 38 cases and Cooper Hospital in Juhu has seven patients. It has come to light that most of the patients are from outside Mumbai.

Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani told the Standing Committee that although the disease was fungal, it was not found to be contagious. Patients with mucormycosis are advised to be monitored for eight to 12 weeks.

Kakani said hospitals have been asked to put multidisciplinary teams in place to treat the infection. The procedure has been started for central procurement of antifungal injection Amphotericin B and other drugs. Until then, hospitals have been instructed to purchase locally, he added.

A day earlier, public health minister Rajesh Tope had said at least 2,000 patients of the deadly fungal infection are currently under treatment in Maharashtra. He also stated that the mortality rate of this disease is nearly 50 per cent.
