Over the last three months, Maharashtra has recorded a 9 per cent mortality rate in citizens with coronavirus associated mucormycosis or black fungus.

According to reports, the death rate is much below the 30-50 per cent range that was seen in mucormycosis patients before the pandemic. From the total 7,359 CAM patients in Maharashtra till June, 14,653 have succumbed. Moreover, of the five worst-hit districts of the state, Pune recorded a 12 per cent mortality rate, Nashik 10 per cent, Mumbai 9 per cent, Nagpur 8 per cent, and Aurangabad 7 per cent.

Meanwhile, experts have attributed the low mortality rate of Maharashtra to the efforts made by medical practitioners in the state. Moreover, surgical removal of affected sinus tissues and usage of anti-mucormycosis drugs like Posaconazole and Isovuconazole greatly benefited the patients, even as there were nationwide shortages of medicines like Amphotericin B.

With the number of patients with mucormycosis increasing in the state and since treatment for the same is not affordable to the common man, the government has decided on fixed treatment rates for private hospitals.

Furthermore, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier on June 5, 2021, approved the decision posed by the health department in this regard. As per the revised guidelines, the cities have been categorized while fixing the rates and authorities have been told to not add any additional charges except the pre-decided prices. Moreover, warnings have been issued regarding the same.
