BMC Asks Centres To Assign Vaccine Quota for Walk-In Healthcare and Frontline Workers

BMC Asks Centres To Assign Vaccine Quota for Walk-In Healthcare and Frontline Workers
SHARES

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that although they received 38,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccines on Saturday, May 8, no vaccines were received on Sunday or Monday. This has led to the civic body saying that vaccinations for people over the age of 45 may be limited to some centres on Tuesday, May 11.

The civic body has also asked vaccination centres to assign a quota of vaccines to be provided for walk-in healthcare or frontline workers. This comes as several people with online appointments have seen a delay or postponement due to the limited availability of vaccines at individual centres.

The BMC announced that 50,674 people were inoculated on Sunday and Monday combined. BMC Executive Health Officer, Dr Mangala Gomare clarified that vaccinations on Tuesday will be conducted only by centres that have leftover doses from Monday as stocks are unavailable.

“If we don’t get any doses on Tuesday, it may be difficult to hold a drive on Wednesday,” Gomare added.

It’s worth noting that some vaccines have been set aside for a few newly launched municipal vaccination centres that will start inoculations on Tuesday. The shortage of Covaxin continues to be a concern for health officials in the state with Gomare saying that limited doses are available.

Concurrently, the BMC is having internal discussions about seeking permissions from the Central Government for walk-in vaccinations among a handful of people in the 18-44 age group. “Say some student wants to go abroad for studies and needs a dose urgently, such a provision could be helpful,” an official was quoted as saying by TOI.
