The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated a tender to acquire the first anti-viral COVID-19 pill, Molnupiravir that attained approval from the Indian drug regulator on December 28, reports stated. Since its availability from last Friday, it has already been prescribed in the private sector, claim accounts. 

Based on reports, thirteen drug makers from the country will be manufacturing the oral drug. It was originally developed by Ridgeback Biotherapeutics a US-based company in collaboration with Merck. In India, on the other hand, it has attained approval through the emergency use authorization for treating those adult patients with COVID-19.

These can be given to those who have a higher possibility of progression to disease and is prominently constituted for mild to moderate cases, highlighted narratives. 

According to accounts, Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner elaborated on how the Central Purchase Department has placed an order for 10,000 bottles. Apart from this, certain civic-run COVID-19 centres will procure the drug by means of corporate social responsibility. 

The course is a five-day treatment wherein the patient is required to take four pills daily. However, it hasn't been authorized for utilization in patients below the age of 18, highlighted reports. Additionally, the five-day treatment of Molnupiravir is claimed to cost INR 2,500 - INR 3,000.
