With the instances of coronavirus cases being on a rise, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has increased the provision of oxygen from the current 210 metric tons to 235 metric tons.

According to sources, in order to avoid medical complications, the civic body of Mumbai recently took 168 patients to a jumbo COVID-19 centre where oxygen is readily available. Moreover, BMC Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani stated that the abovementioned decision has been taken keeping in mind the increasing demand for oxygen.

On Sunday, April 18, several private hospitals and nursing homes in Mumbai experienced severe oxygen shortages. In some hospitals, patients suffering from other diseases were moved elsewhere. The supply of oxygen to the municipal hospitals was reduced by two major manufacturers, Linde and Inox. Moreover, the oxygen production centre of one of these manufacturers was shut down due to technical difficulties.

On the other hand, Maharashtra's Health Minister, on Saturday, April 17, 2020, demanded that the government should allow the transport of oxygen by rail, from other states. Sharing more information regarding the matter, Tope also demanded that pharmaceutical companies in the state should be allowed to manufacture Remdesivir.

To understand the requirements thereby reviewing the status, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, on Saturday, April 17, interacted with the health ministers of all the states via a televised system. State Health Minister, Rajesh Tope, presented his ideas and discussed ways of managing issues like shortage of oxygen and Remdesivir, vaccination, and changing properties of the coronavirus.
