In order to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the city, Mumbai is gearing up to accelerate its vaccination drive.

While speaking to the media on March 22, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that the Maharashtra government has requested to vaccinate 20 lakh doses per day as the state is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases. He further added that every day, three lakh vaccinations are happening and the government is trying to increase it by roping in private hospitals and setting up sub-centres in rural areas to make it convenient for the people.

Even for Mumbai, the plan at the moment is to speed up the vaccination drive. BMC commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal has earmarked a target to vaccinate 4.5 million people in the next 45 days. What this translates is that vaccination centres in Mumbai will have to vaccinate almost a lakh people every day.

Needless to add, if BMC has to stick to these stiff targets, it will need more vaccines. To be well-prepared, BMC has already put in a request for 1 million doses of Covaxin. It is also being reported that this consignment is expected to reach Mumbai this week itself.

Earlier today, the centre also announced that starting April 1, everyone above the age of 45 can get a jab if they wish too. This is a welcome move for Maharastra as the Chief Minister had urged the PM to consider this.

The Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra a week earlier had suggested that everyone in the state should get the inoculated on priority. He had made an appeal to the authorities to implement “emergency permission” for vaccinations to those that are willing to take it. This was done to control the second wave in the financial capital of the country.
