The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to inoculate those in the age group of 12-17 years. The civic body has also set a target of vaccinating 35 lakh people in October and is looking to vaccinate everyone in the city with at least one shot by the end of the month.

BMC, while commenting on the same, stated that given the current scenario, nearly 10 lakh children are eligible to take the vaccine. Once the centre announces the dates, they will go ahead with the plan.

Recently, the Union government had granted emergency use authorization to ZyCoV-D for the age group of 12-17 years. The vaccine is likely to be launched next month, while the initial monthly availability could be about 1 crore doses, reported Mid-Day.

Many schools want their students to be vaccinated, and the civic body is hoping that a part of the doses would reach them by next month. This will help them to start the vaccination drive.

Suresh Kakani, the Additional Municipal Commissioner, while confirming the same, said that once the Indian government announces a drive for children aged between 12-17, they will start inoculating them. They do not mind holding special camps at schools at a later stage, said officials. It is also reported that BMC is likely to conduct its sixth sero-survey post-Diwali.
