Since March 2020, Mumbai has been among the worst affected cities due to coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. A survey was conducted, between January 1 to June 17, 2021, by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to understand the effect of COVID-19 in the city, and as per reports, over 2.9 lakh COVID-19 patients participated in the same.

It is being said that many citizens have not been administered the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine yet. However, the results of the first dose show improved results.

Moreover, out of 2.9 lakh people, only 26 tested positive after taking both doses of the vaccine. At the same time, over 10,000 people were infected with COVID-19 after the first dose.

Data released by the BMC revealed that over 40.75 lakh citizens were vaccinated in Mumbai, in the above-mentioned time frame, and only 0.23 per cent of these were infected with the coronavirus. Meanwhile, data collected by the BMC's War Room showed that over 3.95 lakh patients were infected in the second COVID-19 wave, of which, the war room contacted 2.9 lakh patients for the survey.

Most of these patients were in home isolation. Recent figures show that over 53.8 lakh people have been vaccinated so far and over one million have received both doses of the vaccine in the state.

Meanwhile, officials have informed that Mumbaikars will have to wait longer for the Sputnik V vaccine. Currently, three vaccines - Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V - are being administered in Mumbai, however, only a limited number of Sputnik V doses are available in the state. On the other hand, researchers are also working on a "super vaccine" for all variants of COVID-19. The team working towards the same reportedly managed to assemble a vaccine that was capable of protecting mice from SARS-CoV-2. More information about the same will be released once official results are announced.
