BMC releases COVID-19 vaccination data; over 40 per cent population receives both doses

The state government of Maharashtra has been working relentlessly in ensuring the stock of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines is made available for the citizens across all districts. Several COVID vaccination centres were made functional by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for vaccines to be administered at ease. As per reports, over 9.2 million citizens in Mumbai, i.e. approximately 40 per cent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated, while over 85 per cent has atleast received one dose of the COVID vaccine in the city.

Data further reveals that out of the vaccinated citizens, 55 per cent population are senior citizens, 59 per cent are between 45 and 60 years of age, followed by 23 per cent between 18 and 45 years. On the other hand, 52 per cent of the vaccinated population are healthcare workers and 57 per cent are frontline workers in Mumbai. 

The data includes people who are from the MMR region (20 per cent), disabled citizens, pregnant and lactating mothers, and students who were visiting foreign nations for further studies. Officials believe that the figures will increase in the next few months as centres would continue to administer vaccines to the citizens. Moreover, vaccines for children is also expected in the new few months which could further enhance the scope. BMC officials have informed that the situation would be much better in the following year.

COVID-19 vaccination began across the city from January 16, 2021, and were first administered to healthcare workers followed by frontline workers, senior citizens and then ones between the age of 45-60. Directives were issued by the central government for the same and vaccines were made available at a low cost. However, from May 2021, the government announced vaccination for citizens above 18 years of age and the state governments were asked to purchase the vaccines directly from the manufacturers, post which the delays were noted as enough stock was not available for the entire population. 

Efforts were made by respective governments for the stock to be updated regularly. 

Meanwhile, the BMC also arranged several programs and initiatives for vaccination to ensure citizens do not face troubles at centres. Vaccines were issued at residential complexes, parking lots in the malls, mobile centres, etc. across Mumbai. These moves were appreciated especially by senior citizens who did not have to wait for long to get vaccinated.
