In the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases in Mumbai and the Union Ministry of Health cutting the isolation duration for those, in home quarantine to a week, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, January 6, proclaimed new home isolation guidelines for asymptomatic as well as mild cases.

According to reports, the civic authority released seven eligibility criteria for home isolation. These apply to those coronavirus patients who are "clinically assed and assigned as mild or asymptomatic cases". Based on the circular, asymptomatic are those who don't have any symptoms and are laboratory-confirmed cases.

Along with this, they also have oxygen saturation at room air of over 93 per cent. On the other hand, clinically assigned mild cases are those with upper respiratory tract symptoms with or without temperature. This is along with shortness of breath and oxygen saturation at room air of over 93 per cent.

In accordance with the guidelines, those with severe symptoms that include chest congestion, fever that doesn't subside after three days or oxygen levels below 93 need medical assistance and can be thus, admitted to hospitals, cited accounts.

Officials have been quoted by reports elaborating on how these guidelines also ensure that hospital beds are utilized by those with severe symptoms only. The BMC, however, has clarified that those who cannot home quarantine can do so at isolation facilities.

Apart from this, the civic body has also permitted home isolation of a week for close contacts. They will be tested on the seventh day only if they have symptoms. Those under home isolation will be termed discharged and the isolation ends after nearly seven days pass since they tested positive and if they don't have a fever for three consecutive days. They added that there isn't any need to re-test once the isolation period ends.

However, those with immune-comprised status haven't been recommended for home isolation. Moreover, those isolated will need a caregiver constantly. While those with comorbidities can opt for home isolation, the decision will be taken on medical evaluation. On the other hand, pregnant women two weeks prior to their expected date of delivery are not applicable for home isolation.
