On Wednesday, January 5, COVID-19 cases in Mumbai crossed the 15,000 threshold, with this Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal is reported to have written to private hospitals, asking them to increase their coronavirus bed allocation with immediate effect.

According to reports, the commissioner stated that the capacity should be increased to the highest level that persisted in the second wave's peak in 2021. The said communication for Chahal was sent to private hospitals, deputy commissioner of the BMC, ward officers as well as other authorities.

Chahal wrote that nearly 10-12 per cent of patients are symptomatic daily, with the anticipating that the number of positive cases could double in Mumbai in the next five to seven days. Based on accounts, he further added that considering over 95 per cent of the cases were being reported from non-slum areas, there is demand for private hospital beds. He believes that the patients are reluctant to go to COVID-19 jumbo hospitals and BMC hospitals.

He then went on to note the commendable work private hospitals undertook while managing the coronavirus pandemic. Chahal added that every private hospital will have to update the increase in COVID-19 bed allocation on the real-time integrated dashboard put up by the BMC by apprising the disaster management control room's director.

The civic chief's message also stated that the said instructions apply to all 142 private hospitals in the island city that participated to control the second wave between March and May 2021. He added that the current third wave in Mumbai could not last for over 4-5 weeks according to what transpired in South Africa.

This message, based on reports, also read that BMC staffers will be inspecting the hospitals from January 11 to verify if COVID-19 bed numbers have been put to the peak level.
