The number of cancer cases is increasing in the country as well as in the state. In Maharashtra, the number of cancer patients has increased by half in the last 10 years. According to the information given by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, there are currently 1 lakh 21 thousand 717 cancer patients in Maharashtra, and there has been an increase of 23 thousand 958 patients in the state in the last 10 years.


Changing lifestyle, changing diet, consumption of tobacco products, alcoholism, improper diet, physical inactivity and pollution have been increasing the number of cancer patients for the last few years. Considering the increasing number of patients in the country including the state, the Indian Council of Medical Research has predicted that the number of cancer patients in the country will reach 15.7 lakh in the next two years. 


Currently, the number of cancer patients in the country is 14 lakh 61 thousand 427. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of cancer patients in the country at 2 lakh 10 thousand 958. Maharashtra ranks second in the number of cancer patients. The number of cancer patients in Maharashtra in 2013 was 97 thousand 759. After 10 years, the number of cancer patients in the state has increased to 23 thousand 958 and the number of patients has reached 1 lakh 21 thousand 717. Breast cancer, oral cancer and cervical cancer have the highest number of cancer patients in the state.

In Maharashtra, due to high consumption of tobacco products, the incidence of oral cancer is increasing, along with the incidence of breast cancer among women. In Maharashtra, 30 to 35 percent of patients develop cancer due to tobacco consumption. 35 to 40 percent of patients get cancer due to frequent consumption of contaminated food, junk food, pesticides used in agriculture, chemical agents that pollute the environment, obesity among citizens.

Also, 5 percent of cancer patients have a genetic cause. Cancer caused by genetics is not preventable. But people pay more attention to it. In contrast, cancer caused by the use of tobacco products and chemical agents is ignored. The Bombay Hospital oncologist and Head of Radiotherapy Department said that the rate of cancer is increasing, Dr. Dilip Nikam said.
