In accordance with the assurance given to the Supreme Court by the Central Government, the Centre has placed an order of 660 million, coronavirus vaccines from Bharat Biotech as well as the Serum Institute of India. At the cost of INR 14,505.75cr, it is anticipated for supply between August and December. In the span of the next five months, the Centre hopes to acquire 285 million Covaxin doses from Bharat Biotech and 375 million Covishield doses from the Serum Institute of India.

This order is placed at a rate of INR 225.75 for Covaxin and INR 215.25 per dose for Covishield, including GST. This is higher than the unit cost of INR157.50 that the government was purchasing from both earlier. The private sector, on the other hand, will have access to 220 million doses.

Based on the government’s order, 500 million Covishield doses of which the Central government of India will receive 375 million will be produced, by December. Of the 380 million Covaxin doses produced, the Centre will receive 285 million.

Earlier on June 25, the Health Ministry had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, the said transaction is following it. The Ministry has mentioned that the country will have access to 1.35 billion coronavirus vaccines which can cover the entire adult eligible population of the country, by the year-end. This evaluation comprised 400 million Covaxin doses, 500 million Covishield doses, 300 million of Biological E’s subunit vaccine, 50 million of Zydus Cadila’s DNA vaccine and 100 million Sputnik V doses.
