In recent developments, areas of Chembur and Bandra have been adding more cases of the coronavirus than during the peak of the pandemic in September-October.

Moreover, according to the statistics shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there has been no corresponding rise in the number of COVID-19 deaths so far.

According to the health officials from M-West and H-West municipal wards, the surge is a result of the negligence on the part of the people and their failure to abide by appropriate behaviour with regards to wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing. In September, the M-West ward, which comprises parts of Chembur and Tilak Nagar, used to report up to 85 cases a day. In the past month, the daily count has climbed to 94 cases on some days.

On the other hand, on Tuesday, March 16, Maharashtra recorded 17,864 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus which propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 23,47,328. Currently, there are 1,38,813 active cases in the state. With 9,510 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered patients soared to 21,54,253.

Moreover, 87 people from the state have lost their lives to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours whereas the total has now mounted to 52,996. While 6,52,531 persons are under home quarantine, 6,067 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 91.77 per cent, and 2.26 per cent respectively. In addition, Mumbai clocked 1,922 fresh cases of the coronavirus, 1,236 recoveries and four deaths in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,47,581.
