Almost nine months post the prioritization of healthcare workers for inoculation against the coronavirus, reports claim that there still persists a sense of obscurity on the exact percentage of vaccination in the mentioned group in Mumbai.

According to a report by the Times of India, unvaccinated healthcare workers doesn’t just pose a risk to themselves but also to vulnerable patients.

The report went on to elucidate that based on the statistics released by the civic authority, 2,73,249 are registered as healthcare workers in the island city. Out of these, a mere 51.2% that is 1,40,802 are fully vaccinated while 70% that is 1.89 lakh have received at least one dose. The narrative however claims that this data isn’t without discrepancies, owing to the facilities committed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) themselves. Since the data doesn’t comprise healthcare workers who got their second jab at the private centres. Apart from this, the account tables the idea of possible multiple registrations that increase the workforce numbers. Thus, there isn’t any data that depicts the proportion of medical professionals who are inoculated and if there is an underline hesitancy that needs to be dealt with.

When the vaccination drive began in January, the healthcare workers were the first to be inoculated. Mumbai began with a preliminary registration of 1.3 lakh that by September 16 surged to 2.7 lakh.

The report also mentioned statements of many hospital representatives from Mumbai who spoke about their in-house vaccination number.
