According to reports, a consumer body by the name of Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI), has stated that around 50 per cent of the 120 sanitizers tested in Mumbai are adulterated.

Moreover, of the 50 per cent, 4 per cent was found to contain toxic methyl alcohol. The use of methyl alcohol can further cause health issues such as blindness.

According to a report in Times of India, CGSI, a 54-year-old body, said it will send its report to the Centre and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking action against the fraud.

Earlier, Rajesh Tope, the Health Minister of Maharashtra, had set up a four-member committee in order to curb the prices of face masks and sanitizers. This decision was taken to keep the black market in check as people have been overcharged during the pandemic.

Back in July, Tope had stated that the state government will be appealing to the Centre to include masks and sanitizers in the list of essential commodities. The Health Minister further said that these need to be added under the Essential Commodities Act in order to make them more economical for the citizens throughout the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, in the last 24 hours, clocked 15,765 cases of the novel coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 5,84,537.
