Vaccination for coronavirus is being conducted effectively across the state, as currently, two vaccines - Covishield from the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Covaxin from Bharat Biotech - are being administered to people across India. Large number of vaccinations centres have been set up across districts in Maharashtra, and the government is working towards procuring more vaccines to administer the same to citizens between 18 and 44 years of age. 

As per updates, Russian COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, is said to have 91 per cent efficacy for COVID-19 infection and keeping his in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun discussions with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories for the vaccines. Recently, the global tender floated to purchase vaccine was cancelled, but officials from the civic body are in talks with vaccine manufacturers for the same.

It is being said that the tender issued by the BMC was cancelled as none of the nine companies participating in the tender process was eligible. Meanwhile, according to the information received, the BMC has indicated its readiness to purchase a stock of Sputnik V vaccine, which will be made available by the concerned firm on an experimental basis. 

The administration had released a global statement of interest on May 12, 2021. The deadline was then extended  twice, on May 25 and on June 1, 2021. The BMC has also informed that discussions have been held continuously to assist the firms in completing the documentation.

As of now, Sputnik vaccine is expected to available by the end of June 2021, and the BMC is continuing its efforts to make stocks of COVID-19 vaccine are available for the citizens.

Discussion with the Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories were held with Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Dr. P Velarasu. As of now, the criteria for cold storage of Sputnik V vaccine are different and the administration is working towards making that available and therefore, after receiving this stock, the cold storage will be tested.

The firm has also been asked to stockpile the vaccine in July and August, and the next set of discussions will be held with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories in the next 10 days.
