Rajendra Shingne, Cabinet Minister for Food and Drugs administration in Maharashtra, recently initiated a helpline to make Remdesivir injections easily available.

Earlier on Tuesday, Shingne had held a meeting with companies making Remdesivir. He had stated there were 15,770 vials of the drug available in the state and by the end of the month over 1.5 lakh injections would be made available. Moreover, the helpline number has been issued in order to make information about the infection accessible.

The helpline number which happens to be 1800222365 of the oxygen supply control room will now be available to the patients and their relatives.

Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope had earlier stated that the state had placed orders and the government was obtaining the drug at a nominal rate of ₹2,200 per injection and the pricing along with the sale should be at the same rate. Tope further added that the NCP chief Sharad Pawar had stepped in and assured to arrange 1,000 injections of Remdesivir in his personal capacity for the treatment of people.

Remdesivir happens to be an antiviral drug which works by copying the coronavirus's genetic make-up, the RNA and slows down replication. It happens to be the first drug approved by licensing authorities in the US to treat the patients suffering from COVID-19. Lab trials by scientists have shown that the drug has also been successful in fighting against Ebola in the past.
