According to a report by the State Bank of India (SBI), India is likely to witness the third wave of the coronavirus from August. Moreover, the report stated that the COVID-19 third wave is to peak in September.

Meanwhile, the report, "COVID-19: the race to finishing line," was prepared by SBI Research which stated that "Going by the current data, India can experience daily coronavirus cases were around 10,000 somewhere around the second week of July. However, the cases can start rising by the second fortnight of August," the report said, adding that the country reached the peak of the second wave on May 7.

In addition, the study stated that the projections are based on "historical trends". Furthermore, the global data shows that on average, peak cases reached during the third wave are nearly twice or 1.7 times those from the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. This prediction comes as the country tries to grapple with the aftereffects of the COVID-19 second wave. However, there have been various predictions with regards to when the third wave would hit India.

On the other hand, a new simulation model put out by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has said that the third wave of the coronavirus may not be as drastic or large as expected unless there is a spike of reinfections due to the ageing/decaying of antibodies or the presence of a COVID-19 variant that can escape the immune response. This model came from the TIFR’s School of Technology and Computer Science and was conducted by Sandeep Juneja and Daksh Mittal.
