Maharashtra has witnessed a reduction in coronavirus cases over the past few days. Meanwhile, Mumbai has added fewer than 300 cases for the seventh day in a row on Sunday, August 15.

Civic officials said that testing and tracing will be increased to detect any further surges. This is crucial since the state government has allowed the functioning of malls and permitted local trains for the general public.

Maharashtra recorded 4,797 cases on Sunday while recording 130 deaths. Pune reported the highest number of cases in the state at 1,982. Data shows that Kolhapur added 921 cases, while Nashik and Mumbai added 901 and 699 cases, respectively. One of the hotspots during the second wave, Amravati, reported six cases and no deaths.

Following the 75th Independence Day festivities at Mantralaya, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said, “We have experienced a spike in Covid cases, last year and in the second wave. Though numbers are under control as of now, we should be alert and adhere to strict Covid-appropriate behaviour.”

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) recorded 699 cases and 12 deaths on Sunday. Speaking on the city’s preparedness for future COVID-19 waves, BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani said, “We have knowledge and experience from the first and second waves to fall back on. Jumbo Covid centres have been operationalised while testing will be increased too.”

“Mumbai’s death rate in the state wave remained under 1% and less than the average of other districts,” Kakani added.
