Maharashtra Higher Education Minister Uday Samant has recently stated that the State Higher and Technical Education Department has been contemplating physically reopening colleges and universities in Maharashtra.

Speaking about the same, he stated, “However, keeping the possibility of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, the state task force has asked us to wait. That is why there is some delay in implementing this decision,”

Moreover, he added that the vice-chancellors of state universities have been discussing the resumption of classes in colleges and universities with their local district collectors. In addition, a final report will be submitted in the next 15 days. Furthermore, when asked about the fees of private and unaided colleges amidst the pandemic, Samant stated that a committee has been set up under the chairmanship of CET cell chief Chintamani Joshi and once the committee report is received, appropriate action will be taken.

On the other hand, the Maharashtra education department had earlier decided that some of the schools in rural areas, where there is no threat from coronavirus will continue to function, however, all other schools in the state will not resume from August 17 as was planned earlier. The schools in the state have been shut since the nationwide lockdown was announced in March 2020.

At the moment, offline classes are going on only for students studying in class VII-XII. However, there are certain restrictions in place for these classes and all COVID-19 protocols need to be strictly adhered to. For now, other students have to make do with just online classes.
