Despite a gradual drop in the daily caseload, after a significant spike in the coronavirus cases in the last few weeks, now it has been observed that the fatalities are climbing.
According to a data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai on Thursday, July 7, reported two deaths taking the toll to 10.
This development came a day after the city registered zero deaths after a gap of 22 days on Wednesday, July 6.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that among the deceased were a nine-month-old suffering from Ischemic Heart Disease and Down Syndrome and a 90-year-old man with co-morbidities like hypertension and hernia. With this, it is the first time ever since the pandemic began that the city witnessed a death of infant.
So far, since the beginning of the pandemic, the city has seen 68 deaths in the age group of 0-18, out of which 28 were in the age group 0-9.
Moreover, reports stated that a total of eight COVID-linked deaths were recorded across Maharashtra.
According to the BMC report, the city saw 540 new cases wherein 94 per cent were asymptomatic, whereas the state reported 2,678 new COVID-19 cases.
Additionally, a latest genome sequencing report from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur, found that 20 samples were positive for BA.2.75, a new subvariant of Omicron. All the 20 patients were from Nagpur who recovered. The state so far has 30 confirmed cases of BA.2.75.
