As the past few days have been particularly troubling with regards to reviving the concerns over possible restrictions and return of another national-level lockdown due to the spike in cases of coronavirus, it becomes crucial to understand the second wave of COVID-19.

What does the second wave of COVID-19 essentially mean?

The second wave of infections usually refers to a phenomenon of infections that can develop during a pandemic. According to experts, the disease infects one group of people first. Then, the infections appear to decrease. However, later on, infections increase in a different part of the population, resulting in a second wave of infections.

Is a lockdown necessary right now?

COVID-19 happens to be an infectious disease that can spread extremely fast. Moreover, the individuals who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms can still spread the disease which is why social distancing and limiting contact with others, in addition to other actions such as washing your hands and not touching your face, is pivotal. However, due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown last year, people have still been battling the economical downfall of the same till now with many businesses shutting down across the country, or people losing jobs as a result of it.

What can be done now?

Imposing certain restrictions in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 can be considered. As the risk of contracting the illness remains high, even if certain services like the Mumbai locals have resumed, imposing restrictions regarding the same can help safeguard the citizens of Mumbai. There is already a night curfew that is being imposed in Maharasthra starting today but in our opinion that may not help bring down the spike radically.
