The revised estimations of the Maharashtra government state that the cases of coronavirus are to witness a surge till mid-September, although earlier they were expecting flattening or plateauing of the curve by mid-August or end of the month.

Rajesh Tope, the Health Minister, earlier speaking to the media had stated that the state is unlikely to witness the second wave of coronavirus infections adding that most surveys indicated that there has been a presence of antibodies in about 55 per cent of the population, which points out to a healthy resistance to the contagious disease.

Tope had also opined the plateauing to be achieved by the end of the month, however, has recently stated that the authorities are now expecting the downward trend to begin by mid-September.

According to the officials of the state health department, Ganesh Chaturthi and Muharram have coincided with the continual downpour in Mumbai which could lead to the rise in the cases of COVID-19, along with other monsoon-borne diseases over the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Saturday, August 22, clocked 14,492 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the tally of confirmed cases to 6,71,942.

On the other hand, the number of recovered patients rose by 9,241 in the same period, taking the aggregate of recovered cases to 4,80,114. The recovery rate in the state now stands at 71.45 per cent, as against the national average of 74.69 per cent.
