In 2021 compared to 2020, COVID-19 was the prominent reason for most of the maternal deaths in Mumbai. This information was brought to light in a Right of Information filed by activist Chetan Kothari, reports stated. The data reportedly revealed that of 197, 29 which is 14.7 per cent of the maternal deaths were attributed to coronavirus in 2020. This is 2021, increased to 43 of 190 maternal deaths which are 22.63 per cent.

Based on accounts, previously, haemorrhage, sepsis, and TB were the prominent reasons for fatalities. However, with this information, doctors are of the opinion that there needs to be a greater awareness in regards to vaccination among those pregnant who are at greater susceptibility to contracting COVID-19.

According to reports, other significant causes of maternal deaths in 2021 were Haemorrhage, Sepsis, TB, Heart Diseases, Anaemia and High BP. These were at 21, 22, 16, 9, 4 and 3 deaths, respectively. Further, in 2019, 32 maternal deaths were because by haemorrhage while in 2020, 18 were because of the same cause. 

On the other hand, Dr Suman Bijlani, Gynaecologist obstetrician endoscopic surgeon, at SRV Hospital Mumbai shared that nipple infection cases tend to spike in lactating mothers during the rainy season as the humidity level are high and the fungi spread quickly.
