After spending five months in Mumbai’s Bhatia Hospital and undergoing 25 surgeries, 40-year-old Nishant Kedia is all set to return to his home in Ranchi. Kedia experience near-death experience when his laptop exploded on his face and left him with life-threatening burns.

The incident took place on December 9, 2017, when Kedia was working on his laptop in the bedroom. After a while, when he started feeling sleepy, he dozed off leaving his laptop on charge. Around midnight, his wife, who was in the living room, heard an explosion and she rushed to the bedroom. She tried opening the door but it was jammed due to the air pressure created by the fire. She called the neighbours, who then opened the door.

Immediately after the incident, Kedia was taken to a private hospital where he was denied entry. Later, he was moved to a nursing home where he spent 11 days before he was brought to Mumbai’s Bhatia Hospital. Kedia suffered 50 per cent burns and parts of his ears, nose and elbow bones were destroyed. He also suffered serious respiratory burns.

Dr Shailesh Ranade, plastic surgeon and coordinator of the burns unit at Bhatia Hospital said that Kedia had 50 per cent full thickness burns and had severe septicemia.

We performed multiple surgeries where we used Skin allografts from the skin bank to protect his wounds till they could be covered with his own skin through skin grafting,” said Ranade.
