Up to eight health workers from different hospitals in Mumbai have tested positive for COVID-19 days after taking their second dose of the vaccine. Officials said that all have mild symptoms at the moment, though some had to be hospitalized.

Three healthcare workers that tested positive after completing two doses of the vaccine are now receiving treatment at the city’s SevenHills Hospital. One of the vaccine recipients said he starting developing mild symptoms and tested positive around 10 days after taking the second dose on February 24.

“This is the first time I have tested coronavirus positive despite working in the ICU for the past one year,” he added illustrating the need to remain vigilant against the virus even after vaccination.

It’s worth mentioning that all three patients that tested positive after receiving the vaccine are not in critical condition. “We have three cases post second dose and almost a dozen infected people after the first dose. Most have a mild disease,” Officer on Special Duty at SevenHills, Dr Maharudra Kumbhar said.

“No vaccine has an efficacy of 100%, so some are bound to get the infection after taking vaccines. It has been seen world over,” Dr Kumbhar added.

Meanwhile, KEM Hospital in Parel recorded one case of COVID-19 infection after completing two doses of the vaccine (Covishield). As per the head of community medicine, Dr Gajanan Velhal, a faculty member tested positive around a week after the second dose. “The individual has a mild disease and is undergoing treatment at home. We haven’t heard of any other cases,” Velhal said.

“Coronavirus is an airborne disease and a vaccine can’t stop the infection. What it can do is prevent the infection from progressing to a disease, or preventing the disease from becoming critical,” he added.
