As the festival of holi arrives, markets are flooded with various colours and accessories. But citizens should be careful while buying these as they may be chemicals under the garb of natural colours.

These adulterated colours can be very harmful for health. This year too the FDA is keeping a close watch on such chemical based colours in the market.

Additional Commissioner, FDA, Mumbai Vinita Thomas informed that the FDA has been collecting samples from various parts of the city for testing.

Though FDA conducts this exercise every year, they do not have any action plan to stop this menace. The FDA says that it has to work within its legal framework and may be handicapped on certain occasions.

They say that these colours do not categorize as medicine nor cosmetics.

Hence the FDA cannot take action most of the time.

The FDA has appealed to the public to use natural colours this holi.

RTI activist RPY Rao has slammed the FDA saying that they are running away from their responsibilities. He alleged that the FDA does not act on purpose.

These chemical colours are extremely dangerous for the skin, eyes as it may cause allergies, but the biggest danger is of cancer. Hence the responsibility on the people as well as the FDA is huge so as to avoid the use of such colours.
