Residents of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have to go to private hospitals or Tata Memorial Hospital for cancer related treatment. This often causes problems for the residents. Keeping this matter in mind, on behalf of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Dr. Kailas Shinde, the Commissioner of NMMC, insisted on making this very important chemotherapy facility available for cancer patients through the Municipal Corporation.
Accordingly, the Health Department of NMMC, in coordination with TATA ACTREC, has provided a 10-bed Day Care Chemotherapy Unit facility in Maasaheb Minatai Thackeray Hospital of the Municipal Corporation in Nerul.
The first patient was referred to this cancer day care center and was treated with chemotherapy and the center started actual operations. On this occasion, along with the medical team of the Municipal Corporation, the medical team of Tata Actrec was also present.
Day care chemotherapy is currently an effective and patient-centered treatment method that reduces the need for regular hospitalisation for chemotherapy. This saves time and resources for the patient. For this purpose, a 10-bed day care chemotherapy unit has been started at Maasaheb Minatai Thackeray Hospital, Nerul under the Health Department of NMMC in coordination with TATA ACTREC.
The day care center in Nerul Hospital will be operational from 8 am onwards. Physicians, staff nurses and other specialists as required will be available here for the treatment of patients. To start this day care center all doctors and staff related to cancer treatment were sent for training at TATA ACTREC, Kharghar. The patients of solid tumors will be treated in this day care center.
The diagnosis of the said treatment and the first dose of chemotherapy will be given at TATA ACTREC and if the patient is haemodynamically stable and those patients who do not require Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will be treated from the second dose of chemotherapy at this day care center.
Due to this, the local residents of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area will be able to avail of medical treatment at the public hospital at Nerul. So after getting an appointment at Tata Hospital after a long wait, there will be no need to get up early in the morning and wait in queues all day for treatment. Therefore, the physical, mental and financial suffering of cancer patients in Navi Mumbai will be reduced.
