In light of several hospitals overcharging the patients suffering from the coronavirus, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation has banned the Galaxy Hospital in Mira road from treating COVID-19 patients.
This comes after several complaints were registered by the patients who stated that the Galaxy Hospital was charging exorbitant amounts. The Municipal Corporation has also asserted that the overcharged amount will be recovered for the people by the Corporation.
As per the instructions by the government, private hospitals are required to reserve 80 per cent of the beds for the coronavirus patients, along with charging bills according to the rates provided by the government. However, several hospitals are not abiding by the rule further charging exorbitant bills.
So far, no disclosure has been given by the Galaxy Hospital with regards to non-compliance with the government’s guidelines. Also, no evidence was submitted that the overcharged amount was returned to the patients after the audit which forced the Mira Bhayander Municipal Commissioner Doctor Vijay Rathore to revoke the hospital's approval.
In order to reduce the incidence of the coronavirus in the Mira Bhayander area and to treat the infected patients, 80 per cent of the beds in private hospitals in Mira Bhayander municipal area have been taken over by the Municipal Corporation at the rate fixed by the government for COVID-19.
Earlier, the BMC had launched a crackdown on Mumbai's private hospitals for overcharging COVID-19 patients. The CMO had revealed that the BMC had appointed an auditor to look into the complaints issued by patients accusing private hospitals of overcharging them during their treatment for coronavirus.
