Organ donation and transplant is a common practice used today as many people today are registering themselves for a noble cause of organ donations.
As per reports, a heart was recently transported from Mumbai to Delhi for a transplant surgery in just 2 and a half hours today. The organ was harvested from a donor in Mumbai and was grafted in a Delhi-based woman suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. It was carried both by road and aerially in both the cities, covering a distance of 1,178 km.
The male donor was brain dead at Global Hospital in Mumbai succumbing to serious injuries in a road accident. The recipient was suffering from a condition in which the heart becomes enlarges and cannot pump blood effectively.
In order to ensure a smooth transit of the organ, a green corridor was created between Mumbai and Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (FEHI) Delhi. The heart was airlifted at 3:15 PM from the Mumbai airport and reached Delhi airport at 5:05 PM. It was then carried through another green corridor from the Delhi airport to FEHI spanning 23 km in 23 minutes and reached the hospital at 5:30 PM.
