In order to discourage doctors, nurses, from going on a strike, the state government has sent a proposal to Health Ministry and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of imposing the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA). However, this proposal didn’t go well with the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

Not only MARD but Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also opposed to the state government’s proposal of imposing MESMA.

What is MESMA?
-Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act 2011
-MESMA is invoked to protect the common man’s rights and to ensure that essential services are not affected
-The state can take action against the violators
-MESMA is invoked to maintain smooth services of health services, milk, electricity, and other essential services

One of the doctors associated with MARD said that if the state tries to impose MESMA, doctors will have to listen to the state government and if this happens, then no doctor will work in government hospitals. He added that they have also been trying to meet the Medical Education Minister to put forth their demands but are being sidelined.

The state government’s decision is absolutely wrong. Many times, doctors are beaten up in government hospitals by agitated patients' relatives. The only way to voice out our agony is through strike. The state has decided to slap anti-strike law and we are not at all happy with it," Alok Singh, President, MARD (KEM).
