The number of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai has reached 20,150 and the city is yet to receive respite from the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, the number of Mumbaikars in home quarantine has also grown exponentially over the last month. As per the data, on May 13, close to 2.34 lakh people in Mumbai had been kept in home quarantine as compared to 43,249 a month ago (April 15), indicating 441 per cent rise.

The data put out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) further shows how the number of people in the city placed in home quarantine has grown since the COVID-19 outbreak. On April 6, the number stood 10,968 and surged to 53,118 on April 17, which is a rise of 384 per cent within just 11 days.

As per the civic officials, when a person tests positive for COVID-19, there is an immediate need to ask the patient's high-risk contacts to quarantine themselves and in case, they exhibit symptoms, get them tested. A BMC official told TOI that the high-risk contacts are shifted to COVID care centres if they show symptoms. He added that the people living in the patient's building are also not allowed to move out for 14 days at least and are checked for symptoms as well.

Of the 2.34 lakh people in home quarantine, 12,636 have been shifted to institutional quarantine facilities. Overall, 95,154 have already completed the prescribed 14-day quarantine so far.

In other news, the BMC, on May 17, 2020, updated the list of containment zones in Mumbai. The new report reveals that there is a 75 per cent decrease in the number of zones, where, as of May 17, there are 674 containment zones or red zones in Mumbai, in comparison to 2,643 zones which were listed on May 12, 2020.
