In the month of March last year, Mumbai experienced the outbreak of the coronavirus. During the time, Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Asia, happened to be the worst hit. However, with the efforts of Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmubai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the spread of COVID-19 was contained.

Currently, Maharashtra has been grappling with the second wave of the coronavirus. As vaccinations are being carried out, a new model has been introduced to speed up the process. According to sources, a separate vaccination centre will be conducting vaccinations from Monday, March 22 which is touted to vaccinate at least 1,000 citizens every day. Moreover, medical practitioners and NGOs have been asked to help the slum dwellers gear up and register on the application.

Meanwhile, there are about one and a half to two lakh people in the age group 45-60 residing in Dharavi. In order to vaccinate them, five cells will be set up at the vaccination centre. Moreover, five people can be vaccinated at the same time.

In addition, testing plans are being drafted to control the infection, and clean up marshals have been deployed in several areas under the directive of the municipality. In recent developments, the Mumbai Police has taken up the task of disciplining the citizens through patrolling. Every department is raising awareness among the locals with the help of representatives. According to authorities, officials are controlling the crowds in the market and cracking down on those walking without face masks. However, the emphasis is being given to investigation.
